The Women's Land Army

My Great-Grandma Margaret, who is still alive aged 94, was born in Liverpool, which was bombed a lot during the war and she remembers hiding under the kitchen table as the bombs fell.

When she was older, she worked in a factory making gun shells for Navy destroyers. After that, she volunteered for the Women's Land Army. She said that by 1944, 80,000 women volunteers were working on the land to replace all the men who had joined the Forces to fight in the war. The work was hard and dirty, and the hours were long.

My Great-Grandpa George was given three days leave for the wedding and then had to go back to his ship. I know, that so short for a wedding and honeymoon!
